Morphological Characteristics

Desert Rose (scientific name Adenium obesum) is renowned for its unique form and beautiful flowers. The plant has a swollen stem that is smooth, white-green or grayish-white, with a bulbous base and taproot resembling a wine bottle. The leaves are opposite, clustered at the tips of branches, obovate to elliptical, up to 15cm long, entire, bluntly pointed, fleshy, and almost stemless. The flowers are corolla-shaped, with short downy hairs on the outside, 5-lobed, about 5cm in diameter, with red to pink outer edges, lighter centers, and wavy-edged lobes; they form terminal umbel inflorescences, bearing over ten flowers.

Flower Color Variations

The flowers of the Desert Rose come in colors that range from white to deep red, often with a white or pink blush that radiates outward from the throat. Different varieties of Desert Rose may exhibit various colors and flower forms, including pure white, yellow, purple, and even multi-colored flowers with spots and stripes.

Growth Habits

Desert Rose is native to South Africa, East Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula, often found in arid regions and near deserts, growing on plains, limestone plateaus, rocky foothills, and steep slopes. These plants prefer high temperatures, arid conditions, and plenty of sunlight; they favor well-drained, calcareous, loose, and airy sandy soil. They do not tolerate shade, waterlogging, rich fertilizers, or cold, with an ideal growth temperature of 25-30°C.

Desert Rose has a small stature, an ancient and vigorous tree shape, and a bulbous base like a wine bottle, with bright red and beautiful flowers resembling a trumpet, which is very unique. They can be planted in small gardens for a simple and elegant appearance. Also suitable as potted plants for indoor balcony decoration, they have a strong growth habit and beautiful blooming, making them suitable for greenhouse arrangements as well as home cultivation.
