Agave macroacantha, known in Chinese as Ba Huang Dian, is also called the large-spined agave and is native to the northern regions of Mexico, particularly in the states of Oaxaca and Puebla near Tehuacán. This plant holds a unique place among the Agave genus for its distinctive appearance and growth habits, typically found on rocky slopes, adapted to the arid desert environment.
Morphological Features
Agave macroacantha reaches a height of about 50-60 centimeters with a spread of 60-80 centimeters. Its leaves are sturdy and erect, with a gray-green color and prominent black spines at the tips. The leaves, measuring between 30-50 centimeters in length, are arranged in a rosette pattern.
The sword-shaped leaves range from 17-25 centimeters in length, with some reaching up to 55 centimeters, and are 2-4 centimeters wide, widest in the middle, narrowing towards the base, and gradually pointed at the tip. The plant can grow a flower stalk up to 3 meters tall, bearing red flowers in the summer, adding a vibrant splash of color to the plant. Notably, it ends its life cycle after flowering, a common characteristic of plants in the Agave genus.
